5 Louis Vuitton Bags to Stock Up On: LV Cabas & More

Spotted on the shoulders of Angelina Jolie and Kendall Jenner, Louis Vuitton's Cabas Mezzo Tote is a timeless classic bag that's worthy of a second or third look.

For decades, Louis Vuitton has delighted us with totes, weekenders, and luggage that not only make it easier for us to travel and carry our essentials on-the-go, but also look stylish and sophisticated too. Launched in 2001, the Cabas Bag was immediately spotted on the shoulders of celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Angelina Jolie.

“Cabas” which means basket or shopping bag is the perfect name for this everyday tote due to its size and lightweight design. When the bag came onto the scene, it was introduced in three sizes: Piano, Mezzo, and Alto. The Cabas Piano (12“ x 4.90“ x 9.8“) is the smallest of the three, although it’s what would be considered a medium-sized bag by today’s standards. The Mezzo (15“ x 6.1“ x 13“) is the medium-sized Cabas and it’s perfect as an everyday bag since it’s large enough to hold all your essentials but won’t overwhelm a small frame or is so big it’s unmanageable. And finally, the Alto (20“ x 6.25“ x 14“) is the largest of the three and it’s a great bag for an overnight stay, a school bag, or a trip to the beach.

CABAS DESIGN

All three of the Cabas bags are square-shaped, structured, functional bags with two long top handles. Both the Piano and Mezzo feature a top-zip closure, while the Alto has an open top and each bag has an internal zip pocket, an open pocket, and a gold-tone keyring.

The Cabas bags are most often found in the Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas with leather trim and a leather bottom but can also be spotted in the Damier Ebene canvas.

Louis Vuitton retired the Cabas line in early 2009 so they could make space for new tote bags like the Neverfull and the Palermo. In 2011, LV briefly resurrected the Cabas, but then discontinued it again. Today, the Cabas Totes are highly sought-after bags on the resale market, and both Angelina Jolie and Kendall Jenner have recently been spotted toting their Cabas Mezzo around town.

While it has been discontinued, the Looping Bag continues to be one of Louis Vuitton’s most popular bags ever made. Named for its structured, looped silhouette, the Looping Bag was produced in classic Monogram Canvas and Damier Ebene. Produced in three different sizes, the MM and GM feature a top-zip closure, while the PM has a magnetic flap closure. This bag has become a rare collector’s item.

THE SPEEDY

While it’s not exactly a tote, the Speedy 35 Bag can hold a lot of items, and since the Speedy Bandoulière (or Speedy B) comes with an adjustable shoulder/crossbody strap and a two-way zip closure, it’s easy to carry too. Lightweight and compact, both Speedy designs feature double-top handles, a top-zip closure with leather zipper pull, an internal pocket, leather piping and a logo-engraved padlock.

THE ALMA

In the 1930’s, Louis Vuitton’s grandson Gaston-Louis Vuitton created the Alma Bag. Rumor has it, the bag was custom-made for Coco Chanel. It was named after the Alma Bridge, a span that connects two Parisian neighborhoods. You can find it in any size from Nano to MM, and almost any color and material too.

OnTheGo

Introduced in 2019, the OnTheGo Tote resembles the Neverfull but featuress a modern, oversized monogram print.
