We sat down with Leather Surgeon’s Founder, Gerry Gallagher, who’s widely recognized as one of the finest leather craftsmen in the industry, to find out about his craft and how he can “flip” your best Chanel and Hermés inventory and grow your business.

“It’s no secret that Chanel flaps and Hermes Birkins and Kellys are the most in-demand, so that’s probably a good place to start! Of course, everything comes down to specifics, but a lot of the time the best “flips” are ones that have a major “acute” issue as opposed to ones that look sort of tired overall,” Gerry said. “There are specific bags (like Chanel Grand Shopping Totes) that can really be resurrected and make for great deals, but as a general principle, a bag that’s in mostly good condition with a major issue in one or two areas is going to be a better bet than one that is faded and worn overall.”

Have we piqued your curiosity? Wondering just how long it might take to get your store’s bags repaired or restored? We’ve got answers for you.

“I’d say most bags are on the workbench for around 3-4 hours, but it’s not uncommon for a restoration to take a couple of days. When you’re working on something like a 20-year-old alligator Kelly, it might need new handles or loops, tightening of the touret, hand polishing the metal. Doing a job like that, and then hand-stitching everything back together could take two full days to complete.” Gerry said.
