The Rumor Mill: Chanel's Next Price Hike to Happen in January 2022

Stock up on Chanel right now! While this should come as no surprise, Chanel is not-so-quietly plotting their next price hike in January and it'll impact the minis, the Coco Handles, and more.

Stock up on Chanel right now! While this should come as no surprise, Chanel is not-so-quietly plotting their next price hike in January and it’ll impact the minis, the Coco Handles, and more.

Since a Chanel handbag may be a better investment than the stock market or crypto, stocking up on Chanel bags for your store before the next price hike is a very safe bet. Over the past 10 years, the value of Chanel Classic Flap bags and the 2.55 have more than doubled, and despite the price increases, demand for the Classic Flap Bag, the Boy Bag, and the Re-Issue is stronger than ever.

As you know, in November Chanel raised their prices again for the fourth time since the pandemic struck. And while Chanel claims they’re not limiting the number of bags a shopper can purchase within a certain timespan, we know that’s simply not true. In New York City, there are monthly limits on the purchases of certain classic styles; in Paris, a customer is only allowed to buy one bag at a time and must wait two months to buy another one; and as we previously reported, they’re also limiting purchases in South Korea. By making the bags more exclusive, Chanel is hoping the scarcity will make it an even more desirable brand.

THE CURRENT STATE OF CHANEL PRICES

This is preliminary. While we’re not exactly sure the date of the first price increase of 2022, we can show you what the price hike looked like in November 2021 to give you an idea of the potential increase next month. Now, keep in mind that most price increases range from around 2% to 15%.

BUT WHY IS CHANEL RAISING PRICES AGAIN?

Since Chanel is still one of the world’s top luxury brands, this French haute couture house will continue to raise prices and produce timeless classics, decadent designs, iconic pieces, and exquisite collector’s items for decades to come.

As Chanel continues the push to make their products more exclusive and gain ground on the holy grail of handbags — the Birkin and the Kelly — you’ll see price increases and limitations indefinitely. As of right now, the cost of a medium-sized Chanel Classic Flap Bag costs $8,800 which is only about $100 less than the price of a brand-new Birkin. The only difference is your customer’s chances of getting their hands on a brand-new Birkin at one of the boutiques is slim to none, without your help.

Also, other factors include “unspecified exchange-rate fluctuations, changes in production costs, and to ensure its handbags cost roughly the same around the world.” Let’s not forget that Chanel is now in competition with the secondhand resale market and in some ways, we’re beating them at their own game (for now).

They recently replaced the serial numbers and accompanying authenticity cards with NFC-compatible chips that’ll trace the origin of each bag. These chips will make it easier to verify purchases and locate the person who initially purchased the bag. This could lower the percentage of resellers, but we’re already on top of it.
