Chanel to Limit the Number of Bags a Shopper Can Purchase

While you might've heard rumors that Chanel is limiting the number of bags a shopper can purchase in a year, we're here to tell you it's true — if you live in South Korea. In an effort to increase the exclusivity factor and take on the designer resale market, Chanel has followed in the footsteps of many other brands and will have the final say in how many bags (or small leather goods) a shopper can purchase in a year.

While you might’ve heard rumors that Chanel is limiting the number of bags a shopper can purchase in a year, we’re here to tell you it’s true — if you live in South Korea. In an effort to increase the exclusivity factor and take on the designer resale market, Chanel has followed in the footsteps of many other brands and will have the final say in how many bags (or small leather goods) a shopper can purchase in a year.

For shoppers who live in South Korea — though we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if this limitation were imposed worldwide — they’re only allowed to purchase one Chanel Classic Flap Bag and one Coco Top Handle Bag per year, and only two small leather goods (like cardholders and wallets).

But this doesn’t mean they can go out and buy 15 Chanel Boy Bags and 18 Chanel 19s right this second. There’s already a limitation in place. Introduced in April 2021, each customer is only allowed to buy 12 bags, 12 accessories, 12 small leather goods, and 40 cosmetics or fragrances per year — across the US and globally too.

Not only has Chanel raised prices on some of its most popular bags by up to 20% since the beginning of the pandemic, they’re now controlling how much consumers can buy. This is good news for your store.

**## THE RESALE IMPACT **

Chanel has taken note of the supply and demand of their products on the resale market, and also noticed many of their pre-owned items are selling for as much as, if not more than brand-new bags and accessories. They’re fighting back.

As the designer resale market continues to flourish, top luxury brands are working behind the scenes to take control of your price fluctuations, the exclusivity factor, counterfeit items on the resale market, and to make their prized possessions more out of reach — and that includes constantly raising the retail prices so you have to raise yours too.

Well, now on the resale market anyone can buy a Birkin or Chanel Classic Flap Bag without pulling any strings, begging boutique owners, or minimum spends. They can just go online or go into your shop, pay for the item, and it’s theirs. And while this is great news for all of us, it means these items are no longer exclusive, elusive, or a one-percenter’s ideal way of showing off their wealth and status.

That’s why luxury brands are retaliating — to keep their very wealthy clients happy and ensure their products remain somewhat unattainable, yet aspirational. And to price you out! In fact, Chanel isn’t the only brand to limit how many items a customer can buy from the store.

Louis Vuitton has had this type of limitation in place for a few years. For online purchases, no more than three leather goods, or two identical items are allowed per transaction. And within a four week time-span, one client cannot buy more than six leather goods, or buy in more than three different LV stores in the worldwide network, or complete more than eight transactions.

As a resale company, you shouldn’t view this as competition or a problem, mainly because you already have access to all the bags you want without having to book an appointment at the Chanel boutique, or being granted a spot on a waitlist. But if you’re wondering whether this means the prices of pre-owned designer bags will continue to rise, we’d have to say yes. In fact, there’s another Chanel price hike on November 3rd.

We predict all luxury designer brands will continue to raise their prices for the foreseeable future, and maybe cut back on production too. Whether your customers are ok with paying $10,000 for a Classic Flap Bag, that’s their business, but in addition to Chanel and Hermes, you have so many other designer options on LePrix Wholesale. From Balenciaga to Prada, and Saint Laurent to Burberry, why not stock up on these pre-owned designer bags too?
