It’s no secret the pandemic greatly changed people’s shopping habits and instead of dropping money on clothing or a shoe trend, they began investing in designer jewelry since it could be seen on a Zoom chat, and it’s viewed as a hard asset and a tangible form of wealth. In fact, sales of fine jewelry have outpaced almost every other luxury category for 2020 and 2021 as consumers who weren’t spending money on travel or other experiences put the money aside and eventually made a feel-good purchase for themselves or someone they love.
In the past year, the luxury retail and jewelry industries have experienced some of their strongest growths, as consumers shop for quality over quantity and search for meaningful items that can be passed down to future generations. According to a survey by the Plumb Club, which pulled together information and statistics for the global jewelry market and the US jewelry industry, 48% of respondents said they made a jewelry purchase for a special occasion, while another 28% said they had no reason at all to make that purchase, but in many cases, it was just a gift to themselves. Also, according to the survey, $1,207 is the average amount spent on a jewelry purchase, with over 57% saying the availability of a financing option would influence their decision even more.
LVMH LEADS THE WAY
The world’s largest jewelry company, boasting brands like Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Hublot, and Chaumet, is LVMH Group whose revenue amounted to $54.5 billion in 2020. Today, the company owns 5,003 jewelry stores worldwide and employs over 163,000 people. With its unmistakable and highly coveted little blue box, LVMH’s $15.8 billion purchase of Tiffany & Co. in January of 2021 helped solidify its reign.
Chanel, who is the second-largest trending jewelry brand, reported $13.7 billion of revenue and employees over 20,000 employees. Chanel was followed by brands like Cartier, Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels, and David Yurman.
