This isn’t a rumor, it’s a fact. Louis Vuitton, the world’s biggest luxury brand, raised their prices again on February 16th, 2022.

While many fashion lovers are still reeling from Chanel’s January price increase, we’re here to tell you that prices rose on Louis Vuitton’s small leather goods, canvas items, jewelry and more, and some increases were as high as 37% for the Pochette Accessoires.

So, why are they raising prices this time?

The price adjustment takes into account changes in production costs, raw materials, transportation as well as inflation,“ - Louis Vuitton to Reuters

According to sources, 2021 was a record year for LVMH as they reported a $71.5 billion revenue which is a 44% increase compared to 2020. Its fashion and leather goods division—which also includes Dior, Fendi, Celine and Loewe—reached record highs as fashion and leather goods sales increased 42% from pre-pandemic levels to $34.8 billion.

THE PANDEMIC IMPACT

Throughout the pandemic, luxury brands took advantage of the surging demand for high-end designer items and searched for ways to control their branding, ensure exclusivity, and try to manage pricing and availability of their goods on the resale market—therefore price increases and purchase limitations have occurred.

In fact, Louis Vuitton has had limitations in place for a few years. For online purchases, no more than three leather goods, or two identical items are allowed per transaction. And within a four-week timespan, one client cannot buy more than six leather goods, or buy in more than three different LV stores in the worldwide network, or complete more than eight transactions.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE RESALE BUSINESS

As a resale company, you shouldn’t view this as competition or a problem, mainly because you already have access to all the bags you and your customers could ever want right here and without having to book an appointment at a Louis Vuitton store or being granted a spot on a waitlist. And while this means the value of your pre-owned Louis Vuitton items just increased again, there will undoubtedly be more price increases in the future, so you should stock up on LV items now.

In fact, we predict all luxury designer brands will continue to raise their prices for the foreseeable future, and maybe cut back on production too. So, if your customers are ok with paying $6,000 for a brand-new Capucines bag, that’s their business, but don’t forget they have options and you can offer them what they want, for less.
