The elusive, incredibly exclusive Kelly Bag (formerly known as the Sac à Dépêches) is a fashion-lover’s dream come true. Originally designed as a saddle holder, it’s now an iconic symbol of wealth and status. Hand-made exclusively by a Hermès artisan, each bag takes about 25 hours to complete. The Kelly bag is a rendered in a trapezoidal shape, and it’s a little slimmer and more compact, which makes it a better choice for evening or weekend toting since it can be paired perfectly with either a dressed up or dressed down ensemble.

The Kelly also features a flap, dual-strap closure, two leather buckle straps, a turn-knob and padlock and it’s supported by four feet on the bottom. But unlike the Birkin, in order to close the Kelly, the flap needs to be down to secure the dual-strap closure. The Kelly bag now goes for anywhere from $5,000 up to (and over) $50,000 on the resale market depending on the size, condition and materials.

And while the Kelly bag is in incredibly high demand, in order to secure one, it could take months and tens of thousands of dollars. So that begs the question… is it worth it? Well, of course the Hermès Kelly Bag is worth the investment, but maybe the timing is off or you’re just not comfortable parting with that much money for one bag right now. The timeless Coco Handle features a flap front with a single top handle and interlaced chain/leather shoulder strap. Rendered in a trapezoid shape similar to the Kelly with the interlocking CC closure and gold, silver or ruthenium hardware. It’s been reimagined a few times and most recently as the Trendy CC Handle Bag.

GUCCI SYLVIE TOP HANDLE BAG

Alessandro Michele introduced the now iconic Sylvie Bag shortly after the Dionysus. Whether crafted in buttery soft leather, rich brocade or plush snakeskin, this top-handle design makes an entrance with Gucci’s saddle-inspired designer racing stripes and glimmering hardware. Reminiscent of the Kelly with its trapezoidal silhouette, and sturdy top handle, it’s beautiful and less expensive option.

GUCCI JACKIE BAG

The Fifties Constance bag, known for its half-moon hobo design and piston-shaped closure, was first introduced in the 1950s and is thought to be the original hobo bag. This instant classic became the epitome of timeless style after Jackie Kennedy Onassis was regularly spotted toting it around New York City. It was then renamed The Jackie Bag as a nod to her jet-setting style and influence over the fashion industry. The Jackie O Bag was previously relaunched in 1999 and 2009. In 2020, Gucci’s Creative Director, Alessandro Michele, revived the iconic bag and renamed it The Jackie 1961. He also launched a medium and large Jackie 1961 Tote Bag.
